I began by sketching out design motifs. The customer who I was making this for mentioned that he loves the Fleur de Lis image so I wanted to make this a major part of the design.
Once the full design was sketched out, I could begin to think about the color palette I wanted to use.
This shows the beginning process of laying down the tile.
Further along in the laying of tiles. At this stage, it is very important to think about what background color is going to complement the main motifs.
Completed design. Remaining step is grouting to fill in all the spaces between tiles. This is a necessary step to secure the design in place, but it is also a critical moment to consider the color of the grout I will use to enhance the palette of the design.
Finished piece! I used a dark brown grout with a reddish hint to complement the tile colors and make everything pop.
